CoPIRG Standing Up To Powerful Interests

More Issues

Google, say it ain't so!

Google and Verizon have proposed a deal that, according to the New York Times, would allow "Verizon to speed some online content to Internet users more quickly if the content's creators are willing to pay for the privilege."

We need to keep the Internet free, open and neutral for everyone. This concept, sometimes referred to as net neutrality or Internet freedom, is vital to ensuring that everyone can connect and share information, free from discrimination or interference.

Please tell the FCC to block the Google/Verizon framework.

Petition Text

Dear FCC Commissioners,

The Internet should be free, open, and neutral for everyone, no matter who they are or what website content they are posting or viewing. It doesn't matter how we get online, the information superhighway shouldn't have corporate toll booths.

Please block the Google/Verizon deal and create strong rules for net neutrality.

Sincerely,

Wall Street Banks: Pay Us Back

Just six banks are giving out enough in bonuses to nearly cover every state's estimated budget shortfall this year.

How can the banks reward themselves like it was some sort of banner year? The least they can do is pay us back before they lavish all that money on themselves.

If they won't pay it back, we need to take it back. Sign our letter to your members of Congress, calling for a fee on the banks to recoup our bailout money.

Petition Text
Dear Members of Congress:

We are outraged that the banks who received billions of bailout dollars directly from the TARP program, then even more from the taxpayer bailout of AIG (which used much of it to pay them) and then more from the Federal Reserve, have now declared billions of dollars in bonuses without fully paying back taxpayers.

It's time to put Main Street first. Support President Obama's new fee on the big banks who took taxpayer funds and used them to make massive profits and declare massive bonuses without getting the economy moving again.

Stop the Ticketmaster merger

Ticketmaster wants to merge with Live Nation (Ticketmaster's leading competitor), meaning that most of the tickets we could buy would be coming from the new mega-ticket conglomerate.

Ticketmaster already adds around 30% to the cost of a ticket in junk fees. And from past experience we know that the less competition, the worse these guys get with their handling, processing and other nonsense fees.

Help us stand up to the merger.  Please use the form below to send a message to Assistant Attorney General Christine Varney, head of the anti-trust division of the Department of Justice.  If you can, please add any personal experience you have had with over-priced tickets, or an inability to purchase tickets from alternative vendors.

Tell Me Your Story

I want to hear about your high health care costs or lack of coverage, about how you get stuck in traffic or sacrifice your wallet to skyrocketing energy costs, about instances of identity theft or other rip-offs. I've only been in the state capital for a couple of weeks but I'm seeing that these powerful interests will make sure their voices are heard. CoPIRG provides an alternative voice -- your voice -- and it helps to come armed with real stories from members like you.
