Trouble In Toy Land (new window)

Parents, before you start holiday shopping, read this.

Experts want you to know which toys are safe and which can be deadly. They say there are lots of toys out there that look safe, but are not.

It's been all over the news lately. Toy recalls. Why? Because of unsafe lead levels or chocking hazards.

On Tuesday, the Colorado Public Interest Research Group released a national survey about toys.

One doctor at Memorial Hospital said, "He was basically dying in front of us because his brain had swelled."

He was talking about a child who was rushed into the emergency room. This was while he worked at different hospital, in a different state. The boy couldn't stop vomiting. Then his brain swelled to the point of death. There was nothing doctors could do. That boy died from eating a toy that had a huge amount of toxic lead poisoning.

Children are dying from it and doctors at Memorial Hospital tell 11 News that the dangers are real.

Parents should be warned that, not one toy that sits on the shelves in every store in America, is not tested or inspected by the government, at any point.

Safety experts say, pay extra close attention to toys that are made in China.

Experts say, if you have a toy in the house that can fit through a dowel, get rid of it.

Also, be aware of toys that are too loud. They could damage your child's ear drums.

Kids love playing with magnets but keep them away. Doctors say they could cause serious intestinal damage if swallowed.

The Citizen Outreach Group says the Consumer Product Safety Commission is severely underfunded, making it impossible for them to monitor toys.

If you'd like to try and change that, contact your congressman.
