Energy Efficient Colorado
LANDMARK ENERGY EFFICIENCY POLICY MAKES DIFFERENCE — Since House Bill 1037 was passed in 2007, for-profit utilities, like Xcel Energy, have reduced electricity use by more than 1.6 billion kWh per year, equivalent to the electricty use of 210,000 typical homes.
SAVING COLORADO ENERGY AND MONEY
With our energy needs growing fast, and energy bills rising for all Coloradans, one thing is clear: We can’t afford to continue using energy wastefully. The solution to cutting these costs is simple — energy efficiency.
Utilities Have an Important Role to Play. In 2007, CoPIRG helped pass House BIll 1037, a landmark energy efficiency policy, which required the Public Utilities Commision to set energy savings goals for for-profit utilities in Colorado.
Since 2009, when the goals took affect, for-profit utilities in Colorado, like Xcel Energy, have reduced electricity use by more than 1.6 billion kWh per year, equivalent to the electricty use of 210,000 typical homes. That means more money in people's pockets and less pollution in the air. In fact, Xcel Energy has exceeded the goals set for them each of the last five years and have consistently done it under budget.
Utilities have hit these energy savings goals through demand-side management programs - essentially rebates and discounts that encourage individuals and small businesses to invest in energy efficient uprgrades for lightbulbs and lighting, windows, insulation, better heating and cooling systems, and efficient appliances.
Don't Roll Back Energy Efficiency. Right now, Xcel Energy, the state's largest utility, is proposing to scale back their energy savings goals by about a third. On April 21st, the Public Utilities Commission will be accepting public comments before the next set of hearings and their eventual decision this summer. Please JOIN US IN TAKING ACTION.
Below you will find resources including factsheets to help you draft comments before April 21st.
