CoPIRG Standing Up To Powerful Interests

Amendment 41 Fact Sheet

YES on 41

Ban Lobbyi$t Gifts

Lobbyists dominate Colorado politics. They spend millions of dollars each year on gifts, trips, meals, and other freebies given to elected officials. As a result, the moneyed special interests have access to decision makers that most Coloradans do not.

  • In 2005, Colorado lobbyists gave more than $1.6 million in gifts to public officials, including gifts, trips, golf lessons and Broncos tickets.
  • Over the last ten years, the amount of money spent on lobbying has almost tripled, increasing by 191%

Voting YES on 41 would:

  • Ban gifts from lobbyists to public officials and set reasonable limits on gifts from non lobbyists;
  • Create a two-year “cooling-off” period before legislators can become paid lobbyists;
  • Establish an independent ethics commission.

Coloradans for Clean Government is a coalition, led by Jared Polis and Pete Maysmith, working to pass Amendment 41. Members include Colorado Common Cause, CoPIRG, Colorado Progressive Coalition, Progress Now and others.

Paid for by Coloradans for Clean Government, Ron Binz, Treasurer.
